Our story

I simply wanted to wear organic fibres against my skin while lying in the sunshine, swimming in the ocean or a river, or sweating it out in the sauna.
Mary, founder of ORĀ

The sun, the ocean and the sauna are daily rituals. When Mary couldn't find a natural-fibre suit to wear for them, she began making one, slowly and with talented local people.

Five colours

Dyed from the frangipani.

Each colour is named for a frangipani bloom, deep at the petal's edge and warm toward its heart. Plant dyes take differently every time, so no two pieces are quite the same.

The first piece

One top. One bottom.

A soft triangle top that ties at the neck and back, and a gathered bottom that ties at each hip, so both adjust to you.

What it's made of

  • 55% organic cotton
  • 42% organic hemp
  • 3% stretch, so it holds its shape in the water

The stretch is synthetic, so this first version is 97% plant fibre, not 100%. Plant dyed, and pre-washed so it won't shrink on you.

Slow fashion

Made in small batches, by hand, with intention.

  1. Announced to the list

Each batch opens to the people on this list first, before anyone else hears about it.

  2. Made by local hands

Every piece is cut and sewn by hand by local Balinese makers. No factory line.

  3. Then it's gone

One limited batch at a time. When it sells out, there's no warehouse of leftovers, just the next batch.

Made with Bali, not from it

Named hands. Shared roots.

The first samples were sewn in Bali by our tailor, Agus. These are the promises we are building toward with the people who make with us. We'll share each one once it's real.
